29th Annual Shell Show
 
October 1st & 2nd 2011
 
The largest shell show in the Northeast was held at the Academy on the first weekend of October, 2011. Entry to the show was free with museum admission.

Thousands of beautiful and unusual shells were displayed or for sale. Attractions included:

* Competitive displays by dozens of collectors and amateur scientists.
* Craftspeople and illustrators showcasing their works and competing for major national and regional prizes.
* International Shell Market featuring shells, shell craft, jewelry, books and more.
* Behind-the-Scene Tours of the Academy's Malacology Collection. This collection, which houses about 12 million specimens, is the oldest mollusk collection in the United States and the second largest in the world.
* Meet with Academy scientists, who were available to answer questions and discuss their work.
* Free shells for kids.
* A full program of special shell-themed Academy events and activities for young and old on both show days
* Learn about the Philadelphia Shell Club.
